Pillars of prayer
Pillars of salah are obligatory acts and words within prayer — deliberately omitting one invalidates it.
Pillars of salah (arkan) are obligatory internal parts of prayer. The Federal Territories Mufti Office lists 13 pillars in the Shafi'i school:
- Intention
- Standing (if able)
- Takbiratul ihram
- Recitation of al-Fatihah
- Bowing with stillness
- Standing after bowing with stillness
- Two prostrations with stillness
- Sitting between two prostrations
- Final tashahhud sitting
- Final tashahhud recitation
- Sending blessings upon the Prophet during the final tashahhud
- Salam
- Correct order throughout
Pillars differ from conditions (prerequisites) and sunnah ab'ad such as the first tashahhud. Omitting a sunnah ab'ad does not invalidate prayer, though sujud sahwi is recommended. See the official source or a qualified local teacher for further details.
